Rezenionen REVIEW

18th May 2011: Review by German teachers’ union GEW: Kobold Mouse-Ear

The life of Kobold Mouse-Ear really is extremely interesting and varied, especially when told by the bat himself.

This book tells the story of a whole year in the life of a mouse-eared bat. It contains lots of pages and plenty of text. Sometimes the amount of text makes the book a bit tedious, despite the flowing style and different colours used for the text sections. Maybe Mouse-Ear (the author) could have left out a few of the connecting sections.

The book is illustrated with fascinating photographs, but some of them cause abrupt breaks in the text (e.g. pages 56/57). Although this kind of layout helps to break up the text, it is very challenging for young readers.

The side-by-side presentation of the German and English texts provides plenty of motivation to read them in parallel and to learn new vocabulary, generating an interest in the English language.

The inside covers present a very interesting family tree of the vertebrates in a format that children will easily understand, and shows the evolution of the shape and function of the forelimbs of various vertebrates.

There is certainly no shortage of information in this book. It is very comprehensive, making it perfect for existing and would-be bat enthusiasts.

Kobold Mouse-Ear

It is always humans who show us bats and explain their behaviour to us. But things are very different in this book. Here, it is a bat called Kobold Mouse-Ear who talks about his life and answers all the interesting questions that Lisa and Felix put to him. Grown-ups may find this unusual, but it’s quite normal for children. In the fantasy world in which children live, lots of things can talk. Children talk to animals and can even understand what the animals say to them. Kobold teaches readers a lot about the exciting and mysterious lives of bats. Even I, a long-standing bat friend, found the book inspiring from start to finish. Dr Meissl wants to share her enthusiasm for animals and show her young readers how fascinating their lives are – so exciting that there is no need to invent stories about them.
